Prof Deb Keen

Prof Keen is Professor in Education with the Autism Centre of Excellence at Griffith University. She has an extensive research program and has published in excess of 40 academic journal papers, books and book chapters.

 Her research is primarily focused on ways to enhance participation and engagement of individuals with ASD and their families in home, school and community. More specifically, she undertakes research on evidence-based practices, communication, problem behaviour, early intervention, and family-centred practice. Prof Keen is on the editorial boards of Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice; Australasian Journal of Special Education; Journal of Intellectual and Development Disabilities and associate editor of the International Journal of Disability Development and Education.

Closing the research to practice gap in community-based early intervention services for children with ASD: Arguably one of the biggest challenges that we face in improving outcomes for children with ASD is the implementation of evidence-based practices in real world settings. At the present time, while there is still much to be learned, children with ASD and their families have the opportunity to benefit from several decades of research into the efficacy of various early intervention practices. However, our research and that of others, has found that early intervention staff in community-based organisations for children with ASD report using a mix of supported and unsupported practices. Our understanding of why this occurs and how to overcome barriers to implementation is limited. This presentation will report on research we are undertaking with early intervention service providers to better understand this research to practice gap and to identify effective ways of enhancing knowledge and use of evidence-based practices in these real world settings.
